Thank you for visiting our website to learn more about The Ron Freeman Chorale, the music we perform, and the composers who have made it possible.

The Chorale was founded in 1971 by music director Ron Freeman. The group specializes in the performance of sacred choral music from the Renaissance and Baroque periods, but it also presents works by 19th and 20th century composers. Although in size the group could be considered a chamber chorus, it often programs works for double choir from the 16th century a cappella literature.

The Chorale has performed throughout the Washington, DC-metropolitan area including the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, Washington National Cathedral, St Matthew’s Cathedral, and Kennedy Center. The Chorale also is featured during the Good Friday service at the Franciscan Monastery.

The Chorale's 25th anniversary concert, Music of the Bavarian Court, featured works by Orlande de Lassus and Hans Leo Hassler along with period instruments. A recording of the performance was released on CD in 1997. In a review of the concert, the late Joseph McLellan, longtime music critic for The Washington Post, said "The Ron Freeman Chorale celebrated its 25th anniversary by doing what it does best: singing polyphonic music of the Renaissance."

Through its performances, the Chorale provides area audiences with opportunities to experience this rarely heard music genre. Please take a few moments to browse our website or contact us for more information.

Concert Review

"The chorale sang with firm, well-balanced tone, beautifully clear texture in the passages of counterpoint, a fine respect for the pronunciation and meaning of the Latin words, and just the right level of restrained emotional involvement needed to sing material that is prayer as well as music."
